How to Use a Garmin GPS 12XL

    Using your Garmin GPS 12XL

    • 1). Note a few key instructions before using your GPS unit. The arrow keypad is used for entering all data into the unit. You will use your arrows to select numbers, letters and menu options, followed by pressing the "Enter" key to confirm your selection.

There are five primary pages that you will use while operating your GPS unit: Satellite, Position, Map, Compass and Main Menu. These pages can be accessed by pressing the "Pages" button on your unit.

    • 2). When you first turn on your unit, a welcome page will appear while the unit is loading. After loading is complete, the database page will appear, and you will need to push the "Pages" button until the Satellite page appears. Push the "Mark" key to mark where you are located, commonly referred to as a way-point. Name each way-point as something you will easily remember by highlighting the name field and pressing "Enter." Type in the desired name for your way-point and press "Enter" again. You can store up to 500 way-points on your unit.

    • 3). After you have stored your way-point, you can travel in any direction you wish. Press the "Pages" button until you are on the Position page. The Position page will show you the direction you are moving, the speed at which you are moving and the distance you have traveled from your specified way-point.

    • 4). Press the "Pages" button until you reach the Map page. This page will show your selected way-point as a diamond settled inside the map, with a line drawn to where you are located now. If you have gotten lost and need to find your way back to a way point, select the "Go To" button, highlight your desired way-point, and press "Enter." You will be guided back to your destination. To cancel this action, press the "Go To" button again, navigate to "Cancel Go To," and press "Enter."

    • 5). After using the unit several times, you may want to clear any trips you have saved if you know you will not be using them again. To do so, press the "Pages" button until you see the Map page. Select "Opt," press "Enter," select "Track Setup," press "Enter," then select the "Clear Log" option and press "Enter" to delete all previous maps.

    • 6). To turn off your unit, press and hold the power button for three seconds. Turning off your unit while not in use is a good way to preserve battery life.
