Most people encounter obstacles as they go through life, pursuing their dreams.
They can't find the job they want.
They don't have enough money to buy the house they would like.
The woman of their dreams isn't interested.
There may be circumstances outside your control which seem to be keeping you from reaching your goals.
In fact, those obstacles are usually an illusion.
The biggest obstacles to being successful are usually our own self-limiting beliefs.
Self-limiting beliefs can be anything.
They can be beliefs about you, beliefs about others or beliefs about your circumstances.
Those beliefs block you from having the life you want by blocking you from moving forward.
If you believe in those limitations, you won't be able to overcome them.
They will become permanent obstacles in your life.
When you form a belief, no matter what it is, it takes on a life of its own.
Often it becomes unconscious-outside your awareness-and guides all your actions or inactions without your even realizing it.
Because it is a belief, you unconsciously find ways to reinforce it.
You distort or generalize your experiences, or ignore evidence that would challenge that belief.
It happens without your even realizing you are doing it.
Uncertain times bring out limiting beliefs en mass.
When we listen to the news about job losses, or worry about how this recession will affect us, we open the door for limiting beliefs in our lives.
We end up believing we are victims and have no control over the things that will happen to us.
I think of these limiting beliefs as constituting part of "emotional clutter.
" Emotional clutter consists of negative emotions from the past-usually anger, sadness, hurt, fear or guilt-and limiting beliefs we have picked up through our life experiences.
Emotional clutter creates huge obstacles to being successful, because it blocks us from moving forward.
Because of the obstacles, we may be unable to allow ourselves to find creative solutions to circumstances we do not control.
One of the most insidious of the limiting beliefs is "I can't...
" Any time you believe you cannot do something, you are eliminating it as a possibility.
While it may be true that you do not yet have the skills to do it, or the resources to do it, "I can't" takes it to another level and makes the obstacle permanent.
If you feel stuck, are progressing inconsistently or are having difficulty reaching your goals, you will want to examine your beliefs.
They often form the biggest obstacles to your success.
Watch for beliefs that limit your options.
They will block you from finding or creating ways around the obstacle.
For example, if you believe you "don't know enough," you are likely to believe that you do not have important and valuable skills for a job you would like to have.
Your belief is likely to keep you from pursuing the job of your dreams, or from getting it because you will not be able to convince an employer that you could do the job.
Your own self-doubt will defeat you.
The key to success is being able to move beyond the obstacles that your limiting beliefs create.
This typically involves getting rid of the beliefs that block you so that you can move forward and let yourself shine.
