    Review - Bird-Safe Platform Feeder

A platform feeder is one of the easiest bird feeders to add to a backyard, and the Bird-Safe Platform Feeder from Duncraft updates this classic design with eco-friendly materials and superior viewing opportunities. The feeder's sides are a thick, burgundy-brown recycled plastic with wide 5.5" (14.0 cm) arched openings to allow many birds to easily access the deep seed tray. The roof and tray are made of sturdy, clear acrylic, giving birders easy views not only of the feeding birds, but also of the level of seed remaining for timely refilling.

The generous capacity of the feeding tray is approximately six cups, though the exact quantity will vary depending on what foods are offered. Tray feeders are versatile and the Bird-Safe design is no exception; it is suitable for offering a wide range of treats, including:

This versatility also allows backyard birders to change the types of foods available seasonally, catering to their birds' precise feeding preferences and nutritional needs at any time of year.

The clear roof has a flat top and a relatively steep pitch on the sides to shed water or snow, and the slippery surface can be a minor impediment to squirrels, though it is best to take additional steps to make the feeder squirrel-resistant if they are a consistent problem. The roof also provides cover to protect the feeding tray from rain, though it does not overhang the sides of the feeder significantly and seed can still get wet in windy storms. There are no dedicated drainage holes in the feeder platform, but the sides are not meant to be watertight and some moisture can escape through the seams.

The sections of the feeder are held together with galvanized metal screws – six on the roof and six on the tray – which can be removed for thorough cleaning if necessary. The feeder's plastic construction and smooth surfaces, however, will be easy to clean with a damp rag or sponge without any disassembly. The feeder will not warp or discolor, though the acrylic roof and base may be subject to minor scratches from birds' talons over time, which should not impact the feeder's usefulness.

This feeder is meant to be hung and includes a sturdy metal ring for hanging, and the ring is designed to swivel easily. This ensures the feeder does not tip or tilt excessively, minimizing the risk of spills. No hook is included with the feeder but will be needed for hanging, though it is possible to simply set the feeder on the ground as well and the raised sides – 1.25" (3.2 cm) tall – will keep the seed contained. The raised sides also provide plenty of suitable perches for visiting birds, and smaller birds will feel perfectly comfortable getting right into the feeding tray for the best treats.

A platform feeder is always a hit with backyard birds, and the Bird-Safe Platform Feeder is sure to be a hit with birders as well. Durable, versatile and made with easy-to-clean, eco-friendly materials, this generously sized feeder can instantly augment any feeding station and will offer fun feeding and clear views for many years.
