- 1). Block the rear wheel, opposite of the front wheel you will be removing, with a pair of wheel chocks. Raise the front wheel off the ground with a floor jack positioned under the front lifting point located under the rocker panel just behind the wheel opening. Place a jack stand under the sub-frame for additional support and safety.
- 2). Remove the lug nuts and wheel using a lug wrench and lay them aside. Remove the two 10 mm caliper mounting bolts using a socket and ratchet and lift the caliper off the brake rotor. Slide the rotor off the hub assembly and lay it aside. Remove the axle nut in the center of the hub using a 36 mm axle nut socket and breaker bar.
- 3). Remove the 15 mm pinch bolt that attaches the lower ball joint to the steering knuckle using a socket and ratchet. Pry the ball joint out of the knuckle using a pry bar to pry down on the lower control arm until the ball joint slips out of the steering knuckle.
- 4). Remove the cotter pin and 17 mm nut that attach the tie-rod top the steering knuckle using a pair of wire cutters and a 17 mm wrench. Hit the steering knuckle, near the tie-rod, to pop the tie-rod out of the knuckle.
- 5). Disconnect the strut from the steering knuckle by removing the two 22 mm bolts and nuts that attach the strut to the knuckle. Slide the knuckle off the axle. Take the steering knuckle to a machine shop or auto-parts store and have the new bearing pressed in.
- 6). Slide the steering knuckle onto the lower ball joint, while guiding the axle through the center of the hub, and install the 15 mm pinch bolt. Slip the strut onto the steering knuckle and install the two strut mounting bolts and nuts. Insert the tie-rod into the steering knuckle and install the nut and a new cotter pin.
- 7). Install the axle nut onto the axle and tighten it to 160 foot-pounds using a torque wrench. Slide the brake rotor onto the hub and slip the caliper into place over it. Install the two 10 mm caliper bolts.
- 8). Install the wheel and tighten the lug nuts securely. Raise the car off the jack stand, remove the stand and lower the Neon to the ground. Remove the wheel chocks and test-drive the car.
