- 1). Flip the circuit breaker for the room where you will be working to turn off the electricity.
- 2). Find the location for your new switch and mark the location. Trace the electrical box onto the wall. Cut the traced area out of the wall using a jigsaw.
- 3). Remove the cover plate for the existing switch from the wall. Unscrew the wires from the switch. Remove the old electrical box from the wall.
- 4). Attach fish tape to the new 14-3 cable and fish it to the old fixture location behind the wall.
- 5). Insert the end of the 14-3 wire through the new remodeling box at each new switch location.
- 6). Screw the remodeling box into the wall to attach it at the old switch location, where the light wires are.
- 7). Attach the black wire from the 14-3 wire to the black wire from the light using a wire nut. Attach the black and white wire from the 14-3 cable to the upper right screw on the three-way switch, and attach the black and white wire from the light to the lower right. Attach the red wire from the light to the upper left screw of the three-way switch. Attach the grounding wires from the 14-3 and the light wire to the grounding screw on the top of the three-way switch.
- 8). Attach the white and black wire at the second switch location to the upper right screw of the three-way switch. Attach the black wire to the lower right screw. Attach the red wire to the upper left screw. Attach the ground wire to the top screw.
- 9). Screw the switches into their boxes and attach the covers.
