Insert the VHS tape into the VCR. Connect the VCR to the computer. The VCR will have RCA outputs. Check to see if the computer has RCA inputs. Most likely it will not. That is OK; you can buy an RCA-to-USB adapter for $20 to $50 at electronics stores like Frys, Circuit City and Radio Shack. Plug the RCA inputs into the back of the VCR and match colors of jacks and ports. For example, the yellow jack should go into the yellow video-out port. Plug the USB side of the cable into the computer's USB port. - 2). Open Windows Movie Maker, which you will find in the "Programs Menu" of the computer. Click "File" and then click "Capture." Select the USB/RCA signal for the input. Define the parameters of the capture, such as resolution and bit rate. The default options should be fine. Press "Play" on the VCR and press "Capture." Windows Movie Maker will now begin to capture the video from the VCR. Wait for the tape to finish and press "Stop" in Movie Maker.
- 3). Save newly captured video file. Click "File" and "Publish Movie" and select the publish options (default should be fine). Select an output directory and click "OK." The video will be saved to the computer.
- 4). Insert a blank CD into the computer's CD/DVD drive. Open Windows DVD maker. Drag the captured video file into the new burning-project window. Windows DVD Maker will know a CD is inserted instead of a DVD, and as a result the video will be encoded as a Video-CD file. Click "Next." Set the "Menu Options"; again default should be fine. Click "Burn." The movie will be burned to the CD. Eject the CD and play it in a DVD player.
