How to Wire a Boat for an Electric Start

    • 1). Cut battery cable long enough to extend from the battery to the boat's dashboard. Crimp the ring battery terminal onto one end of the cable with the crimping pliers and crimp the push-on terminal to the other end of the cable.

    • 2). Cut a second piece of battery cable long enough to extend from the battery to the boat's common ground. Crimp a ring terminal on one end of the cable.

    • 3). Use drill and 1/2 inch hole saw to cut a hole in your boat's dash large enough for the threaded part of the PBNO (the starter switch) to fit through. Remove the bottom nut on the PBNO's threaded body, drop the PBNO into the hole. Thread the bottom nut back onto the PBNO and tighten it hand tight.

    • 4). Push the push-on terminal (on the first battery wire you cut) onto the terminal on the starter switch and crimp with the connection with the crimping pliers. Remove the wing nut on the positive battery post and put the ring terminal on the other end of the wire from the PBNO onto the positive battery terminal. Thread the wing nut back onto the positive terminal.

    • 5). Remove the wing nut from the negative battery post and put the ring terminal of the remaining battery cable over the negative post. Replace the wing nut. Connect the other end of the negative cable to the boat's common grounding buss with a screwdriver.

    • 6). Cut a third piece of battery cable long enough to reach from the PBNO to the starter motor. Crimp a push-on connector to each end of the cable. Push one end of the cable onto the remaining terminal of the PBNO and crimp the connector. Push the other end of the cable onto the starter terminal and crimp it in place.
