- 1). Select a location with at least partial shade for the bamboo fountain. This reduces the risk of algae growth in the fountain and provides an inviting sitting area on hot days. Avoid placing the fountain under a tree or plant that drops leaves or flowers to reduce the amount of debris that falls in the fountain. An area away from traffic and other noise sources, such as a rear corner of the yard, allows the fountain's sound to offer relaxation with less distraction.
- 2). Place the fountain on the ground and look at it from several vantage points in the yard. For example, if the bamboo fountain has a spout, situate it so the spout and flow of water is visible from the area where the fountain will most often be viewed from.
- 3). Move the fountain aside. Place a level on the ground at the fountain's desired location. Use the edge of a shovel to scrape the ground until it's level.
- 4). Center a flagstone or piece of marble on the ground. This provides support for the fountain when its weight increases from water and will help keep it from becoming crooked when the earth is wet.
- 5). Put in tall plants such as cannas, bamboo, camellias or evergreens behind the fountain if there aren't plants in place. For example, plant a 6-foot-long row of bamboo behind the fountain to add privacy, shade and a living green wall behind the small bamboo fountain. Select plants that remain green year round and are compatible with your climate. Vines to cover a fence offer a low-maintenance option.
- 6). Add comfortable seating within 6 feet of the small bamboo fountain for maximum enjoyment of the visual and sound effects. For example, center a simple wooden bench with a backrest between the fountain and the house so that it faces the fountain and plants.
- 7). Situate three boulders near the fountain to add height and a mountain feature to the bamboo fountain landscape. For example, place one boulder 2 feet behind the fountain and one boulder to each side, at least 4 feet away from the fountain. Dig a hole at least 25 percent of the boulder's height to station the stone. For example, dig a 6-inch hole for a 2-foot-tall boulder. This stabilizes the boulder and makes it look natural to the landscape.
- 8). Plant moss or ground cover plants--such as Irish moss or babies' tears--in staggered rows around the fountain's location. Dig holes with a trowel the same depth as the plants' containers. Tamp the soil around the plants and water them immediately. The plants will spread between the stepping stones and around the platform to provide a soft carpet around the fountain.
