Temperature Conversion - Very Common and Can Be Easy to Do

What temperature scales are you using? Chances are if you are doing any type of scientific work you are working in either the Celsius or Kelvin scales, but if you are like most of us, you are accustomed to living and working with the Fahrenheit scale.
There are numerous situations that provide the need to convert temperatures from one scale to another as many times we are faced with using temperature information on scales that we are either not accustomed to or the information we have is not in the scale which we need to work with.
This has caused temperature conversions to become common place and the conversions can be easily accomplished when needed.
However, since most of us don't always have the conversion formulas handy and using a calculator can easily result in conversion errors, it is often more easy and accurate to reach out to a web site that has the temperature conversion we need build into unit converters that we can readily access.
An old cookbook is a good example of information we want to use but may be in a temperature scale that doesn't easily work with the equipment we are using.
For instance, you could have a cookbook that uses the Fahrenheit scale and an oven that is labeled with Celsius markings, or your temperature information is in an absolute scale such as Kelvin and you are using equipment with Celsius marks.
In an even worse case, you may have an antique cookbook that was written using the Newton scale which is roughly 1/3 degree Celsius per Newtonian degree or a Russian cookbook that is in the Delisle scale.
To make these recipes useable will require doing a temperature conversion for each of the different temperature settings in the recipes we want to use.
The most common difficulty many parents have dealing with temperature scales is with a Celsius thermometer when they are used to a Fahrenheit world.
In the case of a parent with an infant, it can be a mater of life and death if a child has a sudden temperature spike.
The parent needs to quickly know what the child's temperature is and have confidence that they are handling the situation accurately.
This can often make a groggy parent at 2 am puzzle over the reading on a thermometer that has a scale that they don't have an intuitive understanding of or feel for.
Do they need to be alarmed about a temperature that is three or four degrees above a normal reading? If the scale is Fahrenheit they are still in the OK range, but if in the Celsius scale, and if the child is still conscious, the child is likely near going into convulsions.
In one case a parent knows that action needs to be taken to bring the temperature down, and in the other the child should be on its way to the nearest hospital.
Having confidence in your conclusions at 2 am can be stressful unless you convert the thermometer reading into the scale that gives you confidence in your decisions.
The Delisle temperature scale that has been used in Russia for the last 100 years is the oddest temperature scale that has been in common use and survived to near current times.
It is odd in the fact that as energy and heat increase, the temperature is numerically lower.
Water boils at zero degrees Delisle and freezes a 150 degrees Delisle.
Temperatures that we see as higher than the boiling point of water are negative in the Delisle scale and reach a maximum numerical value of 559.
725 degrees Delisle at the absolute zero reading on other scales.
Anything described using the Delisle scale temperatures requires most people to convert them to Celsius or Fahrenheit if they need to make since of them.
In the scientific community and when working in some industries it is necessary to observe or use absolute value temperature scales to accomplish the task at hand.
The Fahrenheit scale and the Celsius scales are both relative scales and both have absolute scales.
The Celsius scale has an absolute scale, Kelvin, which is used for temperature calculations and reference points.
While Celsius is used for common temperature reference points, Kelvin is used anytime a calculation is done which has an outcome that is directly relative to the actual temperature or amount of heat energy that is contained in a substance.
The absolute temperature tells us how much energy is contained in a substance and can be converted into the average speed of the molecules of a substance.
For example, if you have a fairly elastic gas and want to know how hot it will get if you compress it to fill a space 1/8 of its original size, making us of a simple formula can give that quantity to us without having to measure the temperature of the compressed gas.
However, the temperature used in the calculation must be an absolute temperature.
The Fahrenheit Scale also has an absolute scale, Rankine, which is used similarly to the Kelvin scale for temperature calculations and reference points.
