The Philippines is the most dangerous place for journalists, surpassing Pakistan, Iraq, and Somalia.
Thats what international watchdog International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) said.
One of the reasons stated by IFJ was the failure of the current government to prevent a culture of impunity against journalists.
Under the rule of our most regal and noble royal highness, out of the 74 journalists killed, only 4 convictions were made.
Aiden White, Secretary General of IFJ in a statement said "With elections due in six months time the authorities must act now to guarantee the safety of journalists throughout the country.
This is an event which shocks journalists around the world to the core.
We need a strong and urgent response from the Philippine government and the international community.
" The reason why the convoy that was supposed to pass the certificate of candidacy for gubernatorial aspirant Vice Mayor Esmael Mangudadatu was made up of women and journalists was the rationale that when seen by their political rivals, they wouldn't be harmed.
The victims were just trying to exercise their rights.
But it seems that human rights, and press freedom are just but a whimsical concept in Maguindanao under the tyrannic rule of local political warlords.
The brutal massacre that happened last Monday in Maguindanao is indeed a very disturbing event.
Not just for journalists but for every Filipino.
I'm ashamed of the fact that I call the perpetrators behind that barbaric display as my countrymen.
I just hope that this administration does take this issue seriously and applies the full force of the law regardless of political affiliations.
