- 1). Follow proper preparation procedures (see related eHow).
- 2). Start the engine (see related eHow).
- 3). Sit in the seat near the throttle, gearshift and steering wheel (if the boat has remote controls). Sitting on the back of the seat, kneeling on the seat or standing could place you in danger when the boat begins moving.
- 4). Sit on the seat closest to the outboard in a boat without remote controls.
- 5). Scan the waterway in all directions, looking for boat traffic.
- 6). Set the throttle to the idle position.
- 7). Shift the gearshift into forward, which is usually toward the front of the boat.
- 8). Add speed slowly, using the throttle.
