White goods are a staple of our everyday lives. On average Americans have about 6 of them and use at least half of those daily. White goods, which is referring to household items includes appliances such as fridges and stoves. Although appliances are a problem in our landfills it is not for lack of trying. These items are illegal to dispose of in landfills however some parts of the recycled appliances are still sent to the landfill in the end. Recycling white goods does not always mean sending them to a company which disposes of them the proper way. It can also mean giving the appliance a new home or new life as something else.
If you still want to recycle your white goods here is what you can do.
Call your local recycling center or check their website to find out if they will accept your white goods, which most of them will.
Hire a professional service to dispose of your old appliances, most will even pick it up from your home.
Some cities offer programs which will recycle white goods so you should check your cities website or call for more info.
What else can you do?
Is your appliance in working condition but maybe not the most appealing or in top notch shape? If your old white goods are still functioning or close to functioning there may be a home for them somewhere else. Try to give away your old appliances to someone who may use them still or somebody that repairs appliances. This way it has a chance for a second life.
If your appliance is on its last leg however, you may want to consider a more artistic approach. Think of it as reincarnation for your old white goods. Turn them into a completely new item with a different function. If you have an old fridge thats rusted up or is completely burned out you can turn it into a planter or clean it up and make it a cabinet. Ovens can become TV stands and dishwashers can be fish tanks. It really is up to your imagination but you could turn your old appliances into some newly functioning piece of art or furniture. After all an appliance is just a piece of furniture for your kitchen. Ok, that was just plain silly.
So now if you do not know what to do with your old appliances or at the very least what a white good is, it really is your own bad. However I for one will be using my old white goods for boxcar racers. I feel the extra weight gives you better speed.
