Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Outer Banks, North Carolina

I found out about these campgrounds through the National Parks, and I RV camped there in April 2007.

Describe your camping trip:

While on April school vacation, we camped in three out of four campgrounds on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Ocracoke was very nice because it was a short walk over the white sand dune paths to the beautiful endless beach.

Frisco was the prettiest campground because it was terraced.

The highest road where we picked a spot had a fantastic view of the Atlantic. We hoped for a great sunrise but sadly woke to cloudy skies.

Cape Point was closed until May, so we didn't get to try that campground out.

Oregon Inlet was the smallest campground on the National Seashore, right off Route 12 so there was some road noise.

Pros: Large sites with beautiful scenery everywhere you looked. Very friendly park rangers. In April the campgrounds are not crowded. In fact, one ranger told us we were the first humans he saw all day long.

Cons: Cold showers. Although we travel in a mini RV, we can do without electricity and sewer hookups, but I would love a nice hot shower at the end of a busy day of exploring.

Nearby attractions: Lighthouses, Pea Island Reserve, ferry trips, Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, beautiful beaches, nature walks everywhere.

Further comments:

It was our first trip to the Outer Banks, but it won't be the last.
