How to Cook Rainbow Trout When Camping

A rustic camping trip with few tools

    • 1). Clean and gut the fish, making sure to remove all the insides, including the dark vein down the spine of the fish. You can either remove the head or leave it on. Rinse in clean water.

    • 2). Place a piece of butter in the cavity of the fish. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Take a large piece of heavy duty foil and spread butter on foil (this prevents the fish from sticking to foil). Wrap fish, making sure all ends are sealed by rolling them over tightly (If you only have thin foil, wrap fish two or three times).

    • 3). Place your foil fish packet directly onto the hot embers of your campfire. Avoid placing it on active flames. Leave foil packet for 20 to 30 minutes. You can check the fish to see if it is done by removing and unwrapping. If it needs more time, simply wrap it back up and place it back on the fire.

    • 2). Mix together cornmeal, salt, pepper and any other seasonings you may like to include in a small bowl. Take your cleaned rainbow trout and coat it in the cornmeal mix.

    • 3). Heat frying pan with shortening over fire until hot and place coated fish in oil to fry. Cook a few minutes on each side until done.
