Limit the use of any sort of heat tools on your hair. This includes blow dryers, hot rollers, straighteners, curling irons, etc. If you absolutely must use heat on your hair ALWAYS use a heat protecting spray prior to using it. Dove Heat Defense is a great heat protectant. - 2
If you normally wear your hair up, try putting it up with butterfly clips, hair sticks, or barrettes. Regular hair ties have a tendency to break hair, especially if you wear your ponytail tied back in the same place day after day. If all you have are regular hair ties try making a higher ponytail, lower ponytail, side ponytail, or braids to avoid breakage caused by placing it in the same spot over and over. - 3
When brushing your hair, always use a leave-in detangler, especially if your hair is long. This will make your hair a lot easier to brush through and in turn makes it less likely to break hair by ripping through knots. Envia Leave-In Detangling Conditioner and Johnson's Kids No More Tangles are both good ones. - 4). Avoid using products like hairspray, hair gel, and hair wax. They leave a lot of nasty buildup on your hair and make it a lot harder to brush through when it's time to brush it.

Wash your hair every other day rather than every day and always use a moisturizing shampoo AND conditioner. Pantene Pro-V, Dove, Matrix, and Bed Head are examples of good shampoos that will nourish rather than damage. Cheap shampoos such as Suave and Vo5 seem to do more harm than good so pay a bit extra to get a better product. - 6). Limit the use of hair dyes, colors, and bleaches. If you absolutely must color your hair use a non-permanent or semi-permanent dye. They're far less damaging than permanent dyes so they'll aid in your search to repair dry, damaged hair.

If you have long hair, it is undeniably more prone to split ends and breakage. Using some sort of hair silkening cream on the ends of your hair daily to keep them moisturized and split end free will make a huge difference. Check out John Frieda's Sheer Blonde Dream Cream. - 8). Brush your hair from the ends to the roots, instead of brushing from roots to ends. If you brush the ends first you'll slowly get knots out a little bit at a time, rather than ripping through them, which certainly doesn't help repair dry, damaged hair.

Get regular trims! Most experts say that you should get your hair trimmed monthly, however if you follow all of the above steps you should be able to go about 3-4 months without trimming. Trimming really does make a world of difference though so even cutting only an inch every couple of months will dramatically change the look and feel of your hair.
