Prepare to Give Yourself a Makeover

Shop for the products a few days in advance and pick a day when you don't feel rushed. Pick up the best quality products you can afford. This goes for makeup, hair and skin products. Not only will you notice the difference in quality, but you will also feel pampered every time you use them.

Consider highlights or a new all over color for your hair. Pick something that's easy to do at home and if you're new to home color kits, pick up a box of temporary color rather than permanent. Glazes come in colored or clear and add shine to lifeless hair. Don't forget the deep conditioning treatment.

Drop by the makeup counter at a department store and ask to sample their makeup. Often they give take home samples for free or as a gift for a small purchase. It's helpful to have an outsider's opinion when trying to get out of that old makeup rut. Try different brands until you find something that really strikes home with your skin type and coloring.

Apply the hair color the night before makeover day. This gives you enough time to do a thorough job with the color and wash it out in the shower. There's no need to wash in the morning, just do the hair conditioning treatment.

Give Yourself the Makeover

Take a warm bath or steam shower. The steam opens up the pores, softens and hydrates the skin and sets both the mind and body into a relaxed mood. Add a few drops of lavender or other scented oil to the bath. Use this time to use a deep conditioner on the hair. Apply the hot oil or conditioner, wrap the hair in a towel and relax for the recommended amount of time.

Cleanse the skin as it's the canvas for the masterpiece you will create. Do a gentle exfoliation of the entire skin and apply a mask appropriate for your skin type. Relax and allow the mask to sit on the face and place cool gel packs or slices of fresh cucumber over the eyes. These help to reduce puffiness and make you look well rested.

Pluck those eyebrows into shape and get rid of any stray hairs on the lip or chin. If needed, do a waxing but make sure to allow enough time for the skin to calm down and redness to disappear. Remember the arch of the eyebrow is what frames the eye just like a picture frame.

Apply makeup foundation to the skin. Use concealer first underneath the eyes and then use the new foundation all over your face. Add blush to the apples of your cheeks and just underneath the cheekbone for definition. Sweep bronzer over the skin for a sun-kissed glow.

Blow-dry the hair after applying foundation. Curly or straight, it's time to try that new style you've always wanted. Use heat-protecting spray on the hair while drying and the correct products to hold your style in place. Gels are good for holding in curls while mousse adds volume and serums add shine for straight styles.

Finish the look with striking eyes and pouting lips. Carefully apply the new shadow using the techniques shown at the makeup counter. Use an eyelash curler to open up the eyes and finish with eyeliner and mascara. Apply a base to the lips to prevent bleeding or feathering of the lip color and carefully line the lips, apply color and finish your makeover with a dab of gloss.
