- Before the advent of zip-top plastic freezer bags, people froze vegetables and fruits in cardboard boxes. The boxes are coated with a waxy substance that serves as a moisture barrier. You can obtain these boxes from scientific supply companies that use them to store scientific specimens.
- Rigid, reusable plastic containers with plastic lids stack in the freezer and can be used over and over again. You can find square or round containers in 1- or 2-cup and 1 or 2-qt. sizes at variety and dollar stores.
- Butchers wrap meat in this wax-coated paper and you can too. Purchase freezer paper in large rolls. Tear off the size you need, wrap your meat or fish and seal it with tape. Write on the paper to label your package.
- Some glass canning jars are labeled as safe for both canning and freezing. These jars can withstand the temperatures in a home freezer. The National Center for Home Food Preservation advises leaving extra head space for food expansion in the jar, and thawing the jars completely before heating.
