Home Remedies and High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, known medically as hypertension, is the condition in which a person's blood pressure is chronically elevated.
This happens when the arterial blood vessels, which transports blood from the heart throughout your body, gets blocked thus creating a buildup of pressure and causing high blood pressure or hypertension.
In most cases, there is no identifiable cause for elevated levels.
There is a small percentage of cases where it is caused by other conditions such as kidney disease, tumors, or other ailments.
In a roundabout way, it could possibly be life-threatening.
Although the hypertension itself is not life-threatening, these high levels place an individual at a somewhat higher risk for stroke, heart attack, heart failure, or kidney failure.
Someone told they have high blood pressure has a lower life expectancy rate, patients with severely high levels are generally not expected to live beyond a few years if they don't receive the proper treatments.
There are generally no specific symptoms of high blood pressure, and there are any number of symptoms that could possibly be attributed to it.
The best way to find out if your levels are high is to have your doctor to do a test.
Some possible symptoms may be:
  • Headache
  • Palpitations
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Impotence
It is recommended, after the age of 18, a medical screening should be done yearly and have them check for elevated levels.
Natural Cures for High Blood Pressure.
Reduce Sodium Intake.
Too much salt or sodium is one of the key culprits to high blood pressure.
Salt dissolves into the bloodstream, causing it to become more concentrated, and the body responds by moving water into the bloodstream in order to dilute the salt.
This causes elevated blood pressure, and can contribute to chronic high blood pressure.
Lifestyle Changes.
The Mayo Clinic recommends the following:
  • Eat healthy foods
  • Eat less saturated fat and total fat
  • Limit the amount of sodium in your diet
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Increase your physical activity
  • Limit alcohol
  • Don't smoke
  • Manage stress
Increase Potassium-Rich Foods.
It is believed by many doctors that most diets do not include sufficient amounts of potassium and recommended that you consume more.
Potassium supplements are not recommended; however, as too much potassium can be as bad as too little of it.
Instead, eat more potassium-rich foods like bananas, tomatoes, potatoes, and oranges.
Garlic.
Garlic has been used in many home remedies and has a proven ability to reduce blood pressure levels.
For those who are cutting back on salt because their sodium intake is too much, garlic is also a great flavor substitute.
Weight.
Overweight individuals are also at risk as a healthy diet is not being maintained.
An overweight person is probably not getting enough exercise either and may have a hard time being motivated as they tire easily.
A solution to this problem may be to get a friend or hire a trainer to help you get into better shape.
Being healthy and maintaining a healthy weight can help you live a long and happy life.
