- 1). Place 2-by-4 boards across the attic floor framing for walking in an attic without a finished floor.
- 2). Measure the rafter length in the attic from the top of the attic ceiling to the floor. The rafters slant down from the ceiling crown to the floor on the sides. Measure the horizontal width of the rafters on all four attic walls. Write the measurements on paper with a pen.
- 3). Unroll the radiant barrier outside on the ground. Divide the total horizontal width of the rafters in the attic ceiling by the width of the radiant barrier. This number is the amount of radiant barrier strips needed for the attic rafters in the ceiling.
- 4). Measure the radiant barrier length to the rafter length with a measuring tape and mark it with a carpenter's pencil. Cut the radiant barrier with a utility knife. Measure, mark and cut the additional amount of pieces for the rafters as determined by dividing the total width by the radiant barrier width.
- 5). Roll each piece of radiant barrier into a roll and carry them into the attic. Place the radiant barrier on top of the wooden rafters starting at the top near the crown with the shiny side facing you. Staple the barrier onto the wooden rafters with a staple gun every 4 to 6 inches apart while working down toward the floor. Repeat this step to attach each sheet of radiant barrier in the attic.
