- 1). Purchase the correct length and diameter of steel gas pipe from a DIY store. Attach a strip of electrical insulation tape along both sides of the pipe. Position and secure the pipe horizontally in a vise with the tape resting against the vise jaws.
- 2). Brush around the threads on one end of the pipe, using a wire brush. Wrap yellow sealing tape twice clockwise around the cleaned threads. Threading compound can be used alternatively. Screw a metal end cap onto the taped threads, by hand. Tighten the cap in place with a pipe wrench.
- 3). Apply evenly spaced markings along the top of the pipe using a tape measure and black marker. Note that each mark represents a gas hole. Rest the tip of a center punch on each hole, tapping the end of the punch with a hammer to create an indentation on each mark along the pipe.
- 4). Insert a steel drill bit into a power drill's chuck. Carefully drill through the pipe wall at each indentation. Ensure that the drill bit does not drill through the pipe's opposite wall.
- 5). Rest the tip of a reamer in each drilled hole, and turn the reamer several time to remove all burrs. Loosen the vise and remove the gas pipe. Pull off the tape from the sides of the pipe.
