- 1). Cut either the bottom or top off a large appliance box with a utility knife. Place the box with the open end down on the floor. Apply duct or masking tape to the corners to secure, if needed.
- 2). Draw a rectangular door on one side of the box. Make the door about two-thirds the size of the height of the house, and wide enough for your child to fit. Cut the right side as well as the top of the door pattern and score the left side so the door will open and close.
- 3). Cut a window on each of the remaining sides of the box. Make it any size you like, making it large enough for your child to look through.
- 4). Paint the inside and outside of the box with paint left over from home projects. You may want to paint a layer of primer first, and then paint a color on the house if you are using a box with dark graphics.
- 5). Cut the piece of the box that was cut off the top or bottom into rectangular shutters from one or more of the windows. Make the shutters the same height as the window. Paint the shutters a decorative color with leftover house paints or acrylic craft paint. If the box did not have a top or bottom, recycle old poster board projects into shutters. Use a hot glue gun to attach the shutters to the sides of the windows.
- 6). Make curtains for the inside windows of the house using old towels and cloth napkins. Gather them by hand and hot glue along the top of the window.
- 7). Turn a cereal box into a decorative window box. Cut the bottom off, several inches from the bottom, and use this piece to create narrow window box and paint with the house paint or acrylic paints. Glue the box under the window. Add artificial flowers to the box.
