- 1). Dust and clean out an old shoebox. It should take up just a corner of the space on the table you wish to organize. A box as large as the table space defeats the purpose of an organizer.
- 2). Unroll a length of contact paper with the paper backing side up. Place your box on the paper and trace around the bottom edges with your pencil. Flip your box up on its left long side and trace around that side, as well. Continue tracing this way until you have a rectangle with one rectangle on each side traced onto your paper.
- 3). Cut out your rectangle shape, leaving about a quarter inch between your pencil lines and your cuts. Peel away the backing and set the box in the center of the paper. Wrap the paper up and over the sides of the shoebox.
- 4). Trace a second rectangle shape and use it to line the inside of your box. Press the large, center triangle of the shape down against the bottom of the inside of the box, then smooth down the side pieces.
- 5). Measure the length, width and depth of your box. Decide how many compartments you want to make, based on the size of the things you want to store. For instance, if you want to store small bottles of perfume and makeup, your compartments may only be two or three inches square.
- 6). Divide the desired size of your compartments by both the length and width of your box. For instance, if you want two inch square compartments in a six by eight inch box, you'll get three rows of four compartments each.
- 7). Cut two eight-inch pieces and three six-inch pieces, in this case. Cut one inch slits spaced two inches apart in each piece of cardboard. Slip them together into a grid and slide the grid into your box.
