Asking "How Long Does It Take To Lose Weight?" is a lot like asking "How big is a dog?" And...
the answer is the same.
It Depends!" How much weight? What kind of dog? These are the things we must know to properly answer the question.
Losing weight is a numbers game, or, more accurately, a ratio of numbers game.
To lose one pound of body fat, you must burn about 3500 calories.
Sounds simple enough, right? But...
that's only half of the equation.
To be more accurate, to lose one pound of fat, you must burn 3500 more calories than you consume.
It is the ratio of calories consumed versus calories burned that determines how long it takes to lose a given amount of weight.
Virtually every weight loss product, weight loss diet, or weight loss "miracle" on the market is designed to help you either burn more calories, or consume fewer.
Note the term "help you" in that last sentence.
Even the fancy high-priced products you see on late night infomercials will, at some point, or in the fine print, say "When combined with proper diet and exercise".
This is their way of saying "This stuff alone won't do it! You gotta help!" So, how long does it take to lose weight? The truth is...
it's up to you! And here's why...
When you are inactive (watching TV, for example) your body will burn about 12 calories a day for each pound of body weight.
That means, if you weigh 125 pounds, you'll burn about 1500 calories per day if you just sit around.
If, at the same time, you have one piece of apple pie (and nothing else), you will consume about 2420 calories.
Your body will then store the extra 920 calories (2420 minus 1500) as fat.
But, you know that.
That's how you got where you are in the first place! To lose weight, you have to reverse those numbers.
When you burn more calories than you consume, your body will burn stored fat cells to make up the difference.
The higher the ratio of calories burned to calories consumed, the faster your body will have to burn the stored fat cells to provide the needed energy.
