How You Can Get Pregnant When You Are Over 40

Some women have a difficult time getting pregnant. This is especially true if the woman is over 40 years of age. In fact, according to the Office on Women's Health, the chances of a woman getting pregnant decrease significantly after the age of 30. Though there are many women who have no trouble getting pregnant in their 30s and even 40s, problems with conceiving generally increase after the age of 35.

This is part of the normal aging process. Changes that normally takes place in a woman's body will affect the woman's ovaries and the quality of the eggs she produces. Thus, it will typically be more difficult for women in their 30s and 40s to get pregnant. If pregnancy does result, there is a greater chance for genetic problems with the baby such as Down syndrome. Also, embryos that form from eggs of older women are less likely to properly develop which can lead to miscarriages.

Despite these variables, there are many fertility treatments available to you. Fertility drugs such as clomiphene, intrauterine insemination (IUI) or artificial insemination as it is commonly called, and assisted reproductive technology (ART) methods such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) should all be explored if pregnancy is desired.

Women and couples should also keep in mind the options of surrogacy and the use of a gestational carrier. With surrogacy, the man's sperm is used with the surrogate's egg. A surrogate is a woman who agrees to become pregnant using her own egg and a man's sperm. This option is commonly decided upon for women who produce unhealthy eggs or no eggs at all.

A gestational carrier is a woman who agrees to become pregnant by being implanted with an embryo fertilized by another woman's egg and a man's sperm. Thus, the gestational carrier will have no genetic relationship to the baby. This option is good for women who can produce eggs but does not have a uterus or the threat of serious health issues from the woman becoming pregnant may lead to the use of a gestational carrier.

Getting pregnant is possible and many women have successfully brought a baby into this world. Keep an open mind and keep yourself as healthy as possible.
