- A cold-touch or cool-touch laser uses a cooling agent to lower the surface temperature of the skin, protecting it from damage. The laser kills bacteria and damages the oil glands so that they produce less pore-clogging sebum. The procedure also tightens the skin and diminishes the appearance of acne scars, and so it's a good choice for people who have both active acne and older scars.
- During treatment, you'll wear special glasses to protect your eyes. The laser delivers pulses, and with each pulse you may feel cold from the cooling probe. You may experience some mild redness after treatment, but there should be no pain. Within a few days of your initial treatment, you should begin to notice fewer pimples and cysts. Scars may take longer to fade. The effect of the treatments can last for many months.
Each treatment takes 15 to 30 minutes. Four to eight treatments are usually needed at a cost of $250 to $500 per treatment. Insurance may not cover the treatments because some insurance companies consider laser treatment for acne to be experimental.
