Because of their size and associated plumbing equipment, hot tubs can overwhelm a backyard deck space. Second-level or two-tiered decks make an excellent addition to a hot tub space. Use second level decks to provide seating, shade and privacy and improve the overall backyard experience. - Days outside in a hot tub under the warm sun can become long and uncomfortable without a shady spot to seek refuge. A two-tiered deck provides a perfect opportunity for adding some protection from the sun. Outdoor umbrellas create shade and are easily relocated if need be. For a permanent option, consider installing a pergola or arbor. Pergolas have open sides and slatted roofs that allow for some light penetration as well as allow air to flow through. To provide additional protection from the sun, plant climbing vines that will grow into sun cover.
- Encourage guests to linger and enjoy the hot tub and deck space by providing a comfortable upper-level seating area. Avoid overcrowding the lower deck by focusing the seating area on the second level. Visitors will be close enough to converse with those enjoying the hot tub but will not be crowded into one overworked space. Consider installing a permanent seating area by adding a built-in bench. Built-in furniture also conserves space in a tight area. Furnish benches with cushions and pillows in durable outdoor fabric. Provide small side tables where guests might place a drink or even rest their feet after a soothing soak in the hot tub.
- Add container plantings to visually extend the surrounding landscape onto the deck space. For an eclectic look, use an assortment of brightly colored pots placed throughout the space. A handful of carefully placed larger planting vessels will also add visual interest in a more modern design approach. Wooden planters contribute to an organic and earthy design aesthetic and can be built into the deck itself. Provide added privacy and a touch of green by installing planter railings. Planter railings have containers built directly into the top rail. Choose full and draping plants that will fill out the space and enclose the deck without feeling claustrophobic.
