How to Do an Oil Change on a 2000 Accord Special Edition

    • 1). Park the Honda on a level surface and engage the parking brake.

    • 2). Open the Accord's hood and remove the oil filler cap.

    • 3). Raise the Honda's front end, using a floor jack, and slide jack stands under the vehicle's subframe. Lower the Accord onto the jack stands.

    • 4). Crawl beneath the vehicle and locate the oil pan -- the large metal pan on the bottom of the engine. Position a drain pan under the oil pan drain plug. Loosen the drain plug, using a combination wrench, and remove the drain plug by hand.

    • 5). Pull the old washer off the drain plug and wipe all of the old oil and debris from the drain plug, using a clean, lint-free cloth. Install a new drain plug washer onto the drain plug. Once the oil draining from the oil pan slows to only a few small drips, hand-tighten the drain plug into the engine. Tighten the drain plug to 33 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench and six-point socket.

    • 6). Locate the oil filter on the rear of the engine, just above the oil pan. Position the drain pan under the oil filter.

    • 7). Loosen the oil filter, using an oil filter wrench, and allow all of the oil to drain from the filter. When the oil stops flowing from the filter, remove it by hand and set it in the drain pan.

    • 8). Clean the oil filter mating surface and threads on the engine, using a clean, lint-free cloth. Verify that the O-ring from the old filter did not remain stuck to the mating surface on the engine. If the O-ring did stick to the mating surface, pull it off by hand.

    • 9). Place a small amount of new engine oil on your fingers and coat the O-ring on the base of the new oil filter with this new oil. Tighten the oil filter onto the engine until the O-ring contacts the mating surface, then tighten the oil filter an additional seven-eighths of a turn to seat it.

Raise the Accord off the jack stands, using a floor jack. Remove the jack stands from under the vehicle. Lower the Accord to the ground.

    • 11

Insert a funnel into the oil filler hole and pour in 4.5 qts. of 5W-20 engine oil.

    • 12

Wait about one or two minutes and remove the oil dipstick. Wipe the dipstick off, using a clean, lint-free cloth, and reinsert it into the engine. Remove the dipstick and verify that the level is between the two dots on the bottom of the dipstick. Add more oil, as needed.

    • 13

Tighten the oil filler cap and start the Accord's engine. Allow the vehicle to run for about two minutes and shut it off. Check and adjust the oil level, following the process in Step 12. Close the Accord's hood.

Insert a funnel in an empty oil bottle and fill the bottle with old engine oil from the drain pan. Close the bottle once it's full. Repeat this process until you transfer all of the old oil into the empty bottles. Take the bottles of oil and the oil filter to an oil-recycling center; many auto parts stores take old oil free of charge.
