- 1). Cut an opening in the side of the cardboard box through which the mother cat can exit and enter. The exit should be cut at least 8 inches above the bottom of the box so that the edge will keep tiny kittens from crawling out behind their mother.
- 2). Fill the bottom of the box with newspaper. The mother cat will shred the newspapers to make a nest for her babies.
- 3). Do not add blankets to the box until the kittens are at least a month old. Tiny kittens can easily become trapped in the fold of a blanket and suffocate.
- 4). Change out the papers in the box every few days to keep the nursing cat's bed as clean and comfortable as possible.
