- 1). If you have an existing cabinet above your range, you can use it to hold your microwave oven. But before you begin, measure the cabinet carefully to make sure that there will be sufficient room for the microwave. Ideally the cabinet should be at least one or two inches taller and longer than the microwave oven. This will help to ensure proper airflow around the microwave and allow any built up heat to dissipate quickly.
- 2). Placing your microwave oven above the range should provide a sleek and stylish look. Don't let that great look be ruined with cord clutter. Before you move your microwave from its current location to its new home above the stove be sure to think carefully above what you plan to do with the power cord. Look around your kitchen for a nearby receptacle, then carefully measure the distance between that receptacle and the proposed location of the microwave. With that measurement in hand carefully check the length of the power cord on the microwave. If the cord is not long enough be sure you have an extension cord available. Also be sure you have a way to secure those cords and keep them out of the way. Mounting a power strip to the wall is a great way to get those cords out of your way and reduce the chance of a cord being cut by a knife while you are working in the kitchen.
- 3). Before you proceed it is important to decide whether or not to remove the front door of the cabinet. There are pros and cons to both approaches and it is important to consider your own lifestyle before making a decision. Keeping the cabinet door in place can provide a sleeker and more contemporary look, but it will make the microwave harder to use. Removing the door may sacrifice a bit of style, but your microwave will be easily accessible whenever you need it.
No matter what you do with the front door it is generally a good idea to remove the back panel of the cabinet if possible. This will provide better air flow around the microwave and prevent the buildup of heat. If it is not possible to remove the back plate on the cabinet you will at least need to drill a large hole in it to allow the power cord to be brought through.
