VoIP is inexpensive. Making PC-to-PC calls is free as long as the consumer has an Internet connection. Making PC-to-phone calls may require a small charge, but it is traditionally less than typical land line service. VoIP will also provide end users with the same features they have come to expect from traditional land lines such as call waiting, call forwarding, three-way calling, voicemail and caller ID. - Reaching emergency services via VoIP is critical.call 911 image by Empath from Fotolia.com
VoIP service does have its disadvantages. For one, power outages will temporarily suspend VoIP service, making it impossible to place calls. Also, 911 emergency operators cannot trace consumers' locations via the Internet the way they are able to with land lines. The FCC has stepped in to address this and requires that all VoIP providers meet E911 regulations. E911 provides emergency services with a VoIP user's phone number and location information. - VoIP may not be for everyone.phone. image by Alexander Lukyanov from Fotolia.com
It is important for consumers to weigh the benefits and the risks of VoIP telephones. Saving money is clearly a major advantage to using VoIP, but the uncertainty surrounding being able to contact emergency services may not sit well with end users. The FCC takes VoIP very seriously and consumers may contact them via the web, phone, or e-mail regarding complaints or issues.
