How to Cover Shades With Fabric

    Lampshades

    • 1). Score the outer fabric on your lampshade, cutting away the overlapping fabric on the top and bottom first. Peel away the fabric on the body of the shade, pulling slowly so you don't rip it. If the fabric isn't removable, simply vacuum and clean the shade as best you can.

    • 2). Lay out a large piece of old newspaper. Color the top and bottom edge of your lampshade with a thick layer of charcoal. Roll the shade across the newspaper, pressing down on the edges as you go. The charcoal lines on the newspaper mark the outline of the pattern for your shade. Cut out the pattern with sharp scissors.

    • 3). Pin the pattern around the edges to your fabric. Cut the fabric out, leaving a 1/2-inch border between the edge of the newspaper pattern and where you cut the fabric.

    • 4). Spray your lampshade with spray adhesive and smooth the fabric over the shade. Snip 1/2-inch wide, 3/8-inch long fringes into the fabric sticking out from the top and bottom of the shade. Spray the fringes with adhesive and press the fringes down around the edges of the shade. Allow the glue to cure for 24 hours to avoid your lampshade falling apart. Place the shade back on your lamp and enjoy.

    Roller Shades

    • 1). Remove your roller shade from the window and roll it out on the ground, making sure the side that faces into your home is facing up. Measure the length and width of the shade and cut a piece of fabric 2 inches longer and wider than your measurements. A 24-inch wide, 48-inch long shade needs a piece of fabric 26 inches wide and 50 inches long.

    • 2). Spray the bottom 2 feet of your shade with spray adhesive. Smooth the fabric into place, making sure the fabric is centered and the extra fabric borders are even on all sides of the shade. Repeat, spraying 2 feet at a time until you've covered the entire shade.

    • 3). Flip the shade over. Snip a diagonal line into the corners of the fabric at the bottom. Spray the fabric borders with adhesive and press them into place along the edges of the shade. Allow the glue to cure for 24 hours before reinstalling your shade.
