Not all of us can afford to hire a contractor to turn our yard into a garden of Eden.
Often the desire to have a lovely garden starts with a piece of garden decor that you found on vacation or saw in a friends yard or a magazine.
You may have wished to hang a hummingbird feeder or a wind chime in a lovely spot but have no lovely spot where you can hang it.
I love my garden.
It is so peaceful.
There are glorious flowers and shrubs, fruit trees and fountains.
Hummingbird feeders and seed feeders for the other birds inviting everything from Blue Jays to Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds to frequent my garden from early morning until dusk.
Garden statues and fountains have found a place over the years into my garden decor.
And I never hired a contractor nor a landscaper.
I am proud to say that my garden was done completely by me and my family.
I never had the money to hire a contractor and that was okay because I enjoyed every step of the garden's development from its conception to its transformation.
I am very emotionally connected to my garden and each piece of garden decor that lives there.
The entire process of gardening and creating within the garden provides one with tranquility and the opportunity to let the cares of the world fall away as you become absorbed with the earth, and the individual plants you decide to plant.
Every item that I have added to my garden has seemed to me that it belonged in my garden.
There is garden decor to highlight corners and niches.
There is a fluidity to my garden, when it feels like a particular item just doesn't feel right where it is I find a new spot and try it there for a while.
There are no hard and fast rules for creating a garden but there are definitely some basics you need to consider.
1.
You need to decide what kind of a garden you want.
Do you want vegetables or flowers? 2.
You need to know something about your soil.
Is your a sandy loam, mostly clay, or mostly sandy? 3.
You need to be aware of the light your garden area gets.
How much and what kind of light? 4.
You need to have a general idea of what your garden area is going to look like in the end.
5.
How much space do you have? Are going to garden on a deck or plan a whole field.
Once you get some basic information now you can start planning.
The best way to have a garden that is truly yours is to let your imagination go and follow its lead.
Of course, all of what you do will have to be based on sound gardening principles, providing the needs of any plant you put in the ground is the number one most important thing to take into consideration.
But it is easier than you may think.
When you visit the nursery with some ideas in mind, talk to the nursery man or woman they are a great source of information.
