What Are Thule Keys?

    Thule Locks and Keys

    • Some Thule roof racks can be locked down to deter theft when the vehicle is unattended. The lock housing covers are made from plastic and are located at the base of each mounting foot of the roof rack. Lock-and-key kits for Thule roof racks come with two, four, six or eight lock cylinders; all kits use a one-key system, where one key fits all the locks. The lock cylinders are an optional item and must be purchased separately from the racks.

    Removal of Plugs

    • Circular plastic plugs are placed in the lock cylinder holes on racks that do not have lock cylinders installed. Insert a small flat blade screwdriver into the notch on the outer edge of the plug. Twist the screwdriver slightly to release the plug's retaining clip. Remove the screwdriver and pull the plug straight out of the housing. Repeat this procedure for each housing. Keep the plugs for future installation, if desired.

    Lock Cylinder Installation

    • Insert the key into the lock cylinder. Line up the tab on the lock cylinder with the groove in the hole in the housing where the plastic plug was. Push the lock cylinder straight into the hole until it is fully seated. Turn the key to the left and remove it. The housing has now been locked to the roof rack foot. Repeat this procedure for the three remaining feet.

    Operation of Lock

    • The Thule roof rack can be removed from the vehicle when it is not needed. Insert the key into the lock cylinder of one of the feet and turn it to the right. Pull the entire lock housing straight out from the roof rack foot to expose the mounting bolt and release lever. Repeat this procedure to expose the remaining roof rack feet.
