- 1). Count the number of items in your set of data. For example, if you have scored 23, 29, 15, 25 and 35 points in your basketball games, you would have five items.
- 2). Calculate the sum of all of the items. In this example, add 23 plus 29 plus 15 plus 25 plus 35 to get 127.
- 3). Divide the sum by the number of items to find the average. In this example, you divide 127 by 5 to find the average equals 25.4.
