The garage door is an important and valuable investment for your home. There is no doubt about that. In fact, when it comes to owning a home, one of the most expensive investments that you can own is a garage. Do not worry though because as homeowners and security experts themselves say, this is all worth it.
As a matter of fact, through the years, various innovations have come up to make the garage an even more useful tool for the home. One of which is the opener.
A common tool
This was actually considered as a luxury during its first years in the market. But through time, it has already become ubiquitous. In fact, there are different types and brands to choose from. So before you go shopping for your own opener, here are some things you need to know.
Basic types of garage door
There are four basic types of openers to choose from. Essentially, they are differentiated via the mechanical drive which is used for raising the door.
Chain drive opener
This is the first type. A chain drive door opener works through using a chain that is looped around a rail in order to raise or lower it. The fact is, this type is actually the most common and least expensive compared to others.
Since it is pretty basic and it less costly, a lot of homeowners prefer this type of opener. But the downside is, it can be pretty loud since it uses chains.
Belt drive opener
On the other hand, this second type uses a rubber belt that is reinforced by metal in place of the chain. Again, this is looped around a rail in order to lower or raise your garage. Compared to the first option discussed above, this is more expensive.
But then again, it is also quieter. So if you do not want loud noises to disturb the neighbors or your family when you leave the garage, this would be a more suitable option.
Direct drive opener
Basically, any door that is not operated by a chain or a rubber belt that is reinforced by metal falls under this category. For instance, one model from a particular brand has a motor that glides along a spring-tension chain that is not moving or stationary. This is in contrast to the usual case wherein the stationary motor is the one moving the chain in order to operate the garage.
Screw drive opener
This has been around a lot longer compared to the others. It has a very simple mechanism. It just moves up and down a steel rod which is threaded. With that, they are much easier to maintain compared to other types of opener. But at the same time, they are just as powerful.
But the downside here is that this type of door opener is slow and noisy. Hence, only a few have been using it. McKinney Garage Door Repair
