- 1). Visit the website of a local parks and recreations department of a park with a lake or pond. Many will offer information on whether or not they have paddle boat rentals available. Or just go to a park with a lake and ask if they offer them, or if they know a park that does.
- 2). Paddle by yourself or with up to three other people, whether you want solitude or company. Most paddle boats are two seaters but some are four seaters. Generally there must be at least one person 16 years or older in the paddle boat.
- 3). Decide how long you want to stay out on the paddle boat. The rental place usually offers 1/2 hour time frames up to 2 hours.
- 4). Observe the forecast for the day you plan on going. The rental office will either close or be delayed while it's raining, which just ruins the experience in most cases.
- 5). Know what to do in the event of an emergency before you rent. Make sure the rental office offers life preservers and goes over safety instructions with you and the group.
- 6). Inspect the paddle boat to make sure it's OK to go out onto the water. Look for broken paddles or holes in the boat.
