There is a heated debate going between Internet Marketers and bloggers about what one should focus on when trying to earn money online.
Should you focus on content or should you focus on search engine optimization and getting backlinks? Bloggers believe that "content is king" because they believe that great content is what drives traffic to their websites.
The more content you create and update on a consistent basis, the more people will want to consistently come to your website.
Benefits of great content is that you will get a lot of RSS subscribers and will have many "followers".
A perfect example of this is the professional blogger Perez Hilton.
Perez Hilton makes a living by blogging about celebrity gossip.
He creates good content and people come to his website all the time (17 million per month) to read his blog.
The downside of focusing on content is that you will never have a break.
Do you think people will go to his website if he takes a week off to go to Europe? If he does not continue to post everyday, people will start to become disinterested and will end up going to another celebrity gossip site.
Bloggers that try to make money from content are essentially creating a "brand name" for themselves and make their money from self branding power.
This isn't a bad way to make money, but like said, you will have to continuously create content in order for people to keep coming back to your site.
Using search engine optimization (SEO) and using organic searches is another way to drive traffic to your website.
The basis of this is that you optimize your website to rank well in Google through on-page and off-page SEO.
The focus is not about creating content and the majority of you time is spent "promoting" your website by obtaining links from other sites.
Eventually (ideally), your website will rank in the #1 spot in Google for a keyword.
The benefit from SEO is that you won't have to continuously update your website once it's established and on the first page of Google.
However, the downside is that you will not see a large amount of web traffic in the beginning because it will take awhile for you to rank well enough for people to start coming to your website.
So the conclusion is, do you want to work hard and produce a lot of content or do you want to work really hard in the beginning and not have to worry about your website (low maintenance) all the time? The choice is yours.
