- 1). Stock the pond with healthy fish that will eat mosquito and other insect eggs and larvae.
- 2). Keep plants away from the edge of the pond. Landscape plants that are dangling into the pond can be the base for algae growth and a shelter for mosquitoes.
- 3). Remove debris from the pond often. Debris such as leaves, flower petals, twigs and other items need to be skimmed out of the pond as often as possible. This material can start to rot, causing fish to die and insects to thrive.
- 4). Remove aquatic plants that are providing shelter to insect larvae. Fish need to swim around easily to get at the bugs, covering the pond with thick plants makes that difficult.
- 5). Place a floating ring with bacillus thuringiensis israelensis in the pond to control mosquitoes and other aquatic insects such as blackflies. This will control the larvae, although it has no effect on the eggs. These can be found at garden centers and other pond supply stores.
