- 1). Jack the front and rear of the vehicle into the air and place a vehicle lift or jack stand under the vehicle at each wheel.
- 2). Determine the location of the differential. It is typically located directly in the middle of back wheels in a rear-wheel drive vehicle. In front-wheel drive vehicles, it will be located in the front of the vehicle, between the two wheels. It can be identified by a hole that is plugged with a bolt and two metal rods that protrude from either side of the device that connect to each wheel.
- 3). Locate the bolt on the differential. It will be located on the side of the unit and face the rear of the vehicle.
- 4). Remove the bolt using a wrench, turning it counterclockwise until it comes off the differential.
- 5). Check the oil level with your finger. The differential oil tank should be filled with oil up to the location of the bolt. Some even may have dripped out when you removed the bolt.
- 6). Replenish the oil if necessary. The oil must be pumped into the unit using the pumps that are attached to each bottle of differential gear oil.
- 7). Replace the bolt.
