- 1). Sand down the wainscoting with 220-grit sandpaper. Work sheets of sandpaper around edges and fine details to create a smooth surface.
- 2). Wipe the wainscoting with a damp rag. Remove all dust particles caused by sanding; these will create inconsistencies in the finished product. Allow the wood to dry completely before continuing.
- 3). Stir the polyurethane slowly with a stir stick. Avoid vigorous movement and shaking, which results in air bubbles.
- 4). Dip the tip of the foam paintbrush into the polyurethane and brush a thin, even layer over the entire wainscoting surface. Cover raised areas first, and work away from them on smooth, lower surfaces. Allow the polyurethane to dry for 4 to 6 hours.
- 5). Apply a second coating of polyurethane. Touch up any uneven surfaces to create a consistent finish. Allow the polyurethane to dry for 24 hours before placing anything next to the wainscoting.
