Types of Neurological Disorders

Neurological disorders include seizures, sleep disorders, trauma, infections, movement disorders and spinal cord injuries. Neurological disabilities are a result of damage to the nervous system that results in the loss of body or mental mobility and functions. Such examples of causes of neurological disabilities include heart attacks, genetic disorders, infections and lack of oxygen to the brain. Neurological disorders can also be a result of inherited genetic abnormalities.
For the patient, neurological disorders can be debilitating. Daily life can be challenging and treatments intense.
The major neurological conditions and diseases include multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, headaches, Alzheimer's disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, Parkinson's disease, carpal tunnel syndrome and neuropathy.

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that arises spontaneously or from an unknown cause. It is an idiopathic disease suspected of having an autoimmune cause--the immune response of the body attacks the person's central nervous system, leading to demyelination. This means the sheath insulating the nerves of the central nervous system are damaged. To date, there is no cure for multiple sclerosis.

Cerebral palsy refers to a group of nonprogressive and noncontagious motor conditions that cause physical disability in human development. With cerebral palsy, the affected area is in the cerebrum. Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that occur during fetal development, birth or shortly thereafter. It is characterized by a failure of motor skills, with symptoms such as paralysis, seizures and spasticity.
Today there is no cure, but therapy is often helpful. Aside from being a disabling disease, it carries one of the highest lifetime costs of any birth defect.

Migraine headaches cause severe head pain and are almost certainly genetic-based. With migraine headaches, nerves and blood vessels in the head release a pain-producing inflammatory substance.

Neurological disorders are diseases or conditions of the nervous system.
