- 1). Wash and then towel dry your hair and add a small amount of mousse or gel to the hair strands with your fingertips. Apply the gel starting at the roots and then work your way down to the end of the hair strands.
- 2). Blow your hair dry by directing the air at a 4-inch section of hair at a time. Hold the dryer about 3 to 4 inches from the hair and use a medium heat and power setting on the blow dryer.
- 3). Use a paddle brush to straighten your hair while you are drying it. This will smooth the hair and make it easier to gather into a messy bun.
- 4). Bend your head over and let your hair fall forward. Gather it at the crown into a loose ponytail and secure it with a ponytail holder, as suggested by the Seventeen Magazine website.
- 5). Twist your hair into a messy bun and secure the ends into a loop of the ponytail holder. Don't worry if ends stick out, this is part of the charm of a messy bun hairdo.
- 6). Run your fingers gently through the front portion of your hair to loosen it and give it a bit of height.
