One of the many benefits of homeschooling is the opportunity to celebrate your student's graduation in whatever way is most meaningful to you and your family. If a huge auditorium full of graduating seniors endlessly walking across the stage isn't your cup of tea, you have the freedom to do whatever kind of graduation you want! Make sure to start planning ahead of time, because a great graduation ceremony takes a little work, and you want the day to be perfect. Graduation from high school is truly a cause for celebration, so don't be afraid to pull out all the stops!
Many families choose to send out graduation announcements, and homeschoolers can do this too. If you visit the website of Homeschool Diploma, you'll find everything you need to announce this special event. They provide announcements, diplomas, cap and gowns, honor cords, and a wide variety of graduation supplies. I strongly suggest you award your student a diploma, whether purchased or homemade, because they have graduated from your official homeschool high school, and should receive an official high school diploma. While that's not the same as an accredited diploma, it is just as official, because your homeschool is official.
Many homeschool communities host a graduation ceremony each year, and allow any homeschooler who wishes to attend. These ceremonies often are very tailored to the individual students, and can be quite meaningful. If you want to participate in one of these events, you should find out when registration is ahead of time, since they frequently have a cut off date for reservations. Alternatively, you can choose to hold a ceremony or a simple party at your home, church, or other location, and invite friends and family to join you. Choose whichever style best fits your child and family, and enjoy the benefits and flexibility that come with homeschooling!
When our sons graduated, we held a barbecue party at home, and had a simple ceremony to honor them. We included cakes, gifts, a buffet meal, and special things like a slide show, memory boards, and photo albums. My nephew shared a great website, Animoto, that allows you to easily create slideshows from your pictures, and we had this running continuously for people's enjoyment. We also purchased a great book by Dr. Seuss, ‚¬"Oh the Places You'll Go!‚¬ We used that as our son's senior yearbook, and asked people to sign the book, which became a great memento for them. The memory boards we set out for people to look at reflected each of our son's unique interests, and helped people get a nice glimpse into what their high school lives had been like. We had our sons get senior portraits as well, to commemorate the event. We included a picture in each announcement we mailed out, and saved some for the scrapbooks too!
Homeschooling gives you the flexibility to tailor your education to your child, and that benefit extends to the end of their homeschooling, as you celebrate their accomplishments. Make sure you celebrate what YOU have accomplished too!
