- The freezer compartment of your Amana refrigerator, the home of the ice maker, should be set to 0 degrees Fahrenheit or -18 Celsius. This temperature keeps your frozen food safely preserved and makes it easier for the ice maker to work at peak production levels. Any changes to the thermostat take 24 hours to take effect.
- Remove the plastic bin containing the ice cubes from the freezer compartment and discard the cubes into a sink if they have been sitting unused for more than a few weeks. Old cubes appear discolored and sometimes have a stale taste. Wash the bin with warm, soapy water and thoroughly dry it before hanging it back in place.
- The water filter -- located behind a cover in the upper right corner of the fresh food compartment -- should be removed and discarded roughly every six months. Harmless natural minerals in the water supply become trapped in the filter and eventually cause it to clog. Replacement filters are available from Whirlpool, the parent company of Amana. Running the ice maker without a filter can cause small, harmless deposits in the ice cubes.
- Once a year, switch off cooling to the freezer compartment, make alternative arrangements for your food and switch off the ice maker by raising the sensor arm. Once the compartment is at room temperature, wash the ice cube molds with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Rinse the area thoroughly and dry it with a clean cloth before activating cooling, returning the food and switching on the ice maker. Fresh cubes take 24 hours to appear.
