- 1). Insert the key into the truck ignition and turn the diesel engine on.
- 2). Listen to the engine, the engine should start up quickly and have no misfires. If you hear any misfires or the engine has a hard start, the glow plugs may be faulty and need to be replaced.
- 3). Open the hood of the truck using the hood release latch inside the vehicle. The glow plugs are located under the valve cover. Remove the bolts that hold the valve cover in place using a socket wrench. Slide the valve cover off and you will now have access to the glow plugs.
- 4). Remove the wire that runs from the glow plug to the engine. The wire is not held in by any means of harness, so pull the wire straight out. Replace one glow plug at a time to avoid wire mix-up.
- 5). Use a socket wrench to remove the existing glow plug. Turn the socket wrench counterclockwise. Continue to turn the wrench until the glow plug is loosened. Remove the plug from the engine and discard.
- 6). Align the replacement glow plug in place. Use the socket wrench to tighten and secure the component. Connect the wire to the new glow plug. Repeat these steps for each remaining glow plug. Once finished, replace the valve cover and secure each bolt.
