The Pros and Cons of an Electric Fireplace

When it comes to a fireplace the image that comes to mind is the traditional wood burning fireplace.
However, over the years many alternatives to a wood burning fireplace have come out.
Some of these alternatives are ventless fireplaces that use natural gas, a gel substance or electricity as fuel.
The reason you're reading this article is because you want to know about pros and cons of an electric fireplace.
Lucky for you this article was written from a non-bias point of view.
I'm not trying to sell you a ventless electric fireplace, I'm providing you with the pros and cons of one so you can weigh them and determine if this type of fireplace is right for you.
The primary benefit of an electric fireplace is that it doesn't actually produce a fire.
Unlike other ventless fireplaces that use gas or gel to produce a flame the electric version simply produces heat without the need for a fire.
This can lower the hazard of a fire since there aren't any embers or flames to start one.
This type of fireplace is also very portable, making it easy to move between rooms.
You'll find that many newer models are able to produce a very life like flame and even fool some guests that don't know it's electric.
Some studies have shown that an electric fireplace can be cheaper in the long run to operate than a standard or ventless fireplace.
The biggest disadvantage of an electric fireplace is the fact that it's really just a fancy space heater.
You need to make sure that there is no combustible material or clutter around it to prevent a fire hazard.
If you're looking for the décor of a real fireplace this might not be the best choice since it only mimics a real wood burning fire.
Electric fireplaces have been known to blow fuses every once in awhile due to how they fluctuate in how much power they use.
While this type of fireplace is a great secondary heating source it can be hard to regulate the temperature it produces; you'll find yourself turning it up and down constantly to keep comfortable.
As you can see an electric fireplace is the best choice if you want all the benefits of a fireplace without the fire.
However, it does have its limitations and a homeowner should decide if this is the right choice for their home.
Thousands of fires a year are due to space heaters and with the electric version of a fireplace being just that special care is needed.
Remember; always follow the rules and recommendations set forth by the manufacturer!
