How to Link and Wire a Generator to a Panel

    • 1). Turn off the power at the meter before beginning the process of hooking a generator into a house electrical panel. This will allow you to work inside the breaker panel without worrying about electrical shock. Remove the face from the breaker panel to allow you work inside.

    • 2). Loosen the lugs at the top of the main breaker with a wrench. Use the wrench to loosen the lug at the top of the ground or neutral bus. Pull the the two wires attached to the main breaker and the wire attached to the ground bar up and out of the breaker box. Insert the two hot and one ground wire that will attach to the transfer switch into the breaker box. Attach the two hot wires and the ground wires under their respective lugs. Use the wrench to tighten all three lugs until all of the wires are firmly held in place. Replace the face onto the breaker panel.

    • 3). Lift the transfer switch box into position next to the breaker panel. Using a screwdriver, insert screws through the back of the switch box and into the wall to secure it to the wall. Pull the three wires from the electric meter into the top of the transfer switch box. Insert the two hot wires under the lugs in the upper portion of the box. The third wire will go under the ground lug in the same area of the box.

    • 4). Insert the three wires from the breaker panel into the transfer switch box. The two hot wires will be inserted into lugs in the middle of the box. The third wire will go under the ground lug off to the side near the middle of the box. Insert the three wires from the generator into the lower part of the transfer switch box. The black and red wires will go under the lugs near the bottom of the box. The white wire will go under the ground lug. Use the wrench to tighten all of the lugs until the wires are secure.

    • 5). Move the lever on the transfer switch box to the upper setting for utility power input. Turn the electric on at the meter to restore power to the house. If you choose, you can start the generator and move the transfer switch lever to the generator power position to test your installation.
