- Every air-conditioning unit has a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). The rating provides a measure of the amount of energy needed to provide a certain amount of cooling.
- The SEER range varies by unit. Models manufactured after January 26, 2006, must have a SEER rating of at least 13. Older models may have an air-conditioning rating of 6 or less.
- Models with a lower SEER rating may be sold and installed if they were manufactured before January 26, 2006.
- Air-conditioning units that meet the energy efficiency requirements set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy are designated with an Energy Star.
- In order to maximize savings, the unit purchased should be the proper size for the square footage to be cooled. It should also be installed in the proper location that is shady and away from anything that would prevent proper airflow.
