- 1). Undo the battery cables for safety and drain the power steering fluid. Raise the front end of the Chevy Avalanche and remove the wheel assemblies. Some Avalanches shipped with engine shields, which you also need to remove.
- 2). Disconnect the stabilizer shaft, power steering pressure lines and the intermediate shaft's coupler clamp bolt. Separate the outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckle. Unhook the intermediate shaft from the rack assembly and remove mounting nuts, bolts and washers.
- 3). Pull the rack and pinion gear away from the vehicle and replace it with a new one. Remount the washers, nuts and bolts, and then torque to 136 foot pounds. Reconnect the intermediate shaft and tighten the shaft's coupler clamp bolt to 33 foot pounds.
- 4). Reconnect the hoses and tighten the fittings to 20 foot pounds of torque. Reconnect the tie rod ends, protection shield, stabilizer shaft and wheels.
- 5). Lower the vehicle and reconnect the battery cables. Fill the power steering reservoir and idle the engine to bleed. Check for leaks after you let the fluid level.
- 6). Realign your front end. Test drive thoroughly before hauling equipment or passengers.
