How to Increase Vertical Leap Ability

The ability to jump higher than before is something that many athletes need for their sports and even those that do not rely on jumping can still benefit from this skill as the power and strength you can generate from a jump can be applied to other physical skills as well.
How to increase vertical leap is not as easy as just practicing however as you need to train your muscles to be stronger and more explosive while you also need to learn to recruit the right muscles to jump higher too.
The most important thing you can do is to build the muscles in your legs to be ready to unleash this explosive power than can send such a large mass against gravity.
To do this you have to have a jumping program of exercises that will strengthen all aspects of your leg muscles including the feet, glutes, thighs, calves and more.
Vertical training form is reliant on having a body that has the strength to actually perform these new feats of improved vertical leaps.
Squats Squats are one of the best exercises you can do to help you increase vertical jumps.
A word of caution though: squats if performed incorrectly can be very dangerous and/or provide no benefit because they are not activating the right muscles in your legs.
Some tips for good squats are:
  • Knees must stay above the feet at all times
  • Keep your chest out and your back straight
  • Slight forward lean but not too much
  • Keep your weight on your heels
If you are having trouble with these you may need to do flexibility exercises which will also benefit you in your quest to increase vertical leaps.
Lunges Lunges are another good exercise that can be done with or without weights.
By stepping forward as far as you can and going to one knee then standing and bringing the next foot forward repeating the action; this can strengthen your muscles and build them in the same routine.
again keep your back straight, chest out and don't forget to activate your muscles and squeeze as you do the lunge to recruit your glutes as well.
Step Ups Again, this can be done with or without weights by stepping up onto a step or a box one leg at a time.
The higher the box the more effort you will need to put in but do not overextend too early and lose your form.
Again keep your back straight and stay upright do not collapse your body as you do this make you legs work for it! Typically you want the box to be at a height that your leg is at a 90 degree angle when you put our foot on it.
Are these the answer to how to increase your vertical leap? Not by a long shot, but they are a very important part of training your body into jumping higher than before.
